CHANDIGARH: The Panjab University Youth and Heritage Festival 2016-17 for zone B started on Monday at MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, Chandigarh. This year's theme for the youth festival was 'Youth for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and National Development'. The chief guest on the occasion was Kirron Kher, MP of Chandigarh, and a renowned film personality.
The four-day event will continue till Thursday.
While addressing the students, she stressed on the fact that education in the institutes should not be just about getting good grades but a more realistic approach of development so that more well-rounded personalities can be given to the country.
The festival started with shabad/ bhajan teams where first prize went to MCM DAV College, second to Post Graduate Government College for Girls, sector 11 (PGGCG) and third to Dev Samaj College for Women. After that, group song was there in which first prize went to PGGCG, second to MCM and third again to Dev Samaj. Among the team winners, first was Simran Chaudhry from MCM, second was Abhilasha Gill and third was Parvati from Dev Samaj.
In heritage, art and culture, there were events like paranda making, tokri making, mitti toys making and more such activities. For toy making, first was Ramandeep Kaur, Guru Gobind singh College for Women (GGSCW), Jhar Sahib, second was Goldy Negi of PGGCG-11 and third was Sudesh from GGSCW sector 26. In paranda making, first prize went to Jaspreet Kaur of GGSCW, Jhar Sahib, second to Ramandeep Kaur of PGGCG-11 and third to Jyoti of National College for Women, Machhiwara.
Principal Nisha Bhargava applauded the efforts of the participating teams and specially congratulated the winners of Day-1 of the youth festival. She added that Panjab University Youth and Heritage Festival is a prestigious platform for students to showcase their creative energy and talent.
